3 Personal Branding Theses For The New World of Work - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
3 Personal Branding Theses For The New World of Work - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career 1. The internet has forced everyone to become a marketer. Gone are the days when only college marketing majors and entrepreneurs had to know how to use marketing to build brands. These days, the internet has enabled everyone with a pulse and some ambition to take advantage of this growing platform. Its all about survival of the fittest online and the best marketers, with the right message, will get the most attention and thus the most business opportunities. Of course everyone needs an online presence and most people that you know at minimum have a Facebook profile. The issue most people have is how to become an active contributor online, while balancing their time with their other commitments. The requirement now and moving forward is that your brand must be appear online every single day, with few exceptions. This marketing commitment didnt exist years ago, but now it does because the competition is everyone, everywhere. Thats right, youre competing for air time with people in Australia, Brazil, etc. There is a lot of marketing pressures on you because just having profiles online isnt enough anymore. Thats just the ticket to entry. Marketing should be instilled into individuals at a younger age because its becoming more part of our lives, not just how it effects our decisions, but how it can be leveraged for career success. 2. The economy has forced everyone to become an expert. The economy is much different now than it was a decade ago. The amount of competition there is for just about anything is jaw dropping. From trying to get into college to getting your first job upon graduating and then climbing the corporate ladder or building a business, the stakes are higher and the failure rate is greater. Expertise has become something referred in our society. Corporations pay premiums on it and recruiters salivate over it. By not being an expert in a specific niche, it will be near impossible for you to stand out and be known for something, regardless of your current situation. Luckily, a new solution has become accessible to all in the form of a published book. The fastest way to become an expert is to become an author. Years ago, it would have been difficult to recommend the publishing approach to people, but the internet has given rise to new publishing practices that have been embraced. Self-publishing is on the rise and now there are numerous services, such as LuLu.com and iUniverse, that can get your book on Amazon.com for distribution. What can a book do for you? You will get quoted in the press, consulting and speaking gigs and become more attractive to companies that are looking to hire thought leaders. A few decades from now, the term blog will be powerful enough to make some a true expert in their field as well. Right now, a blog is perceived as too ammature to carry the same weight. 3. The recruiting system has forced everyone to become a networker. Corporate recruitment has been a broken system for a while now. It has also inspired some of my most controversial posts, such as how people shouldnt submit resumes through job boards. From the company perspective, they are trynig to find the best possible talent at the lowest possible cost and risk to the business. From the individual perspetive, you are trying to get the highest paid job and in a position with the most opportunity for advancement. As you can see, this can be a conflicting situation for both parties. Also, due to the sheer amount of resumes that are submitted for jobs each day, its becoming almost impossible to stand out. Im a firm believer that the size of your network, not just the quality, will be a major component on how jobs are gotten in the future. Companies understand the correlation between network size/strength and productivity/business development. Someone with a relatively small network cant open up as many doors and thus is less valuable to a company thats looking to grow. Someone with a small network will have to worker harder to find and understand key concepts than the ladder. Your network is visible for the first time in history. I can review your social accounts to find out how connected you are. How many Facebook friends do you have? Twitter followers? LinkedIn contacts? Blog subscribers? Dont you see where all of this is going? Those with the most robust networks will be the most successful. A recruiter that stumbles upon two equal candidates will take the candidate with the larger network every single time. Network size is going to become part of how were judge d because of the amount of competition and visibility of our connections online.

7 Breakfast Resolutions for the New Year
7 Breakfast Resolutions for the New Year With many of us following such busy schedules, breakfast can often become a rushed affair, if not skipped entirely. But, as the most important meal of the day and much-needed fuel for your body, it deserves to be taken seriously. So, if youâre someone who could benefit from making some healthy changes to your morning routine in the new year, here are a few breakfast resolutions to keep in mind. Donât skip it Research on breakfast habits has revealed that 1 in 5 people skip breakfast on a regular basis. Sure, it might feel like your morning schedule is chaotic enough without having to factor in time for breakfast, but itâs worth it for the sake of your health. By skipping breakfast, you could be increasing your risk of health problems, such as type 2 diabetes and migraines, so itâs in your best interest to start your day with some nutritious grub. All you need to do is set your alarm 15 minutes earlier! Prepare something the night before Free up your time in the morning by whipping something together for your brekkie the night before. Dishes like overnight oats or yoghurt and chopped fruit are easy to put together and refrigerate overnight, so itâll be ready and waiting for you when you roll out of bed. Fill yourself up Not only can skipping breakfast or grabbing something on the go lead to unhealthy eating habits, but a grumbling belly can be distracting at work too! Avoid reaching for unhealthy snacks mid-morning by eating something filling for brekkie that will tide you over until lunchtime. Youâll feel more satisfied and more focused for it. Swap coffee for herbal tea While coffee consumption is perfectly fine for you in moderation, many report feeling sluggish after the caffeine boost has worn off. Even when drank in the morning, it can impact some peopleâs sleep pattern and quality. English Breakfast Tea, on the other hand, only contains a third of the caffeine of a cup of coffee. More so, some herbal teas contain just minimal traces of caffeine and can offer health benefits such as improved digestion, boosted immune system, stress relief and more. Eat something nutritious Itâs the most important meal of the day, so make sure your breakfast is nutritious and is going to give you the energy boost you need. Protein is the ideal option, as it takes more time to digest and will leave you feeling full for longer. Combine it with high fibre food to keep your digestion working at its best. Some healthy breakfast options include eggs on wholemeal toast and unsweetened cereal with low-fat yoghurt and fruit. Try something new If you feel uninspired by your standard breakfast options, why not branch out and try something new? It could be a brand-new recipe or just mixing things up with some new ingredients. For example, there are tonnes of ways to enjoy a bowl of oats, from banana and blueberry flavour to figs and honey. If youâre feeling experimental, you could even substitute your oats for quinoa or pop some chia seeds in with your oats for an added protein supplement. Take your time When youâre in a hurry in the morning, it can be tempting to gobble your breakfast down as quickly as possible, but this can lead to indigestion. Instead, chew consciously and take your time over your food. Youâll enjoy it more and it will be better for your digestion. Ready to get 2020 off to a healthy start? If you follow these breakfast tips, youâre sure to feel more energised and ready to cease the day (and year). A healthy breakfast equals a healthy lifestyle! Beware scam jobs University of Manchester Careers Blog
Beware scam jobs University of Manchester Careers Blog Once again there is an article in the news warning that jobseekers are vulnerable to scams. We see graduates every year who get suspicious but there may be many more who unwittingly get scammed. International graduates can be especially vulnerable as they are often unfamiliar with UK recruitment practices and dont always realise that they have been taken advantage of until it is too late. Some can be conned out of money, or not be paid for work they have done. Some can be the victim of identity theft. Some can even be tricked into criminal activities. Dont let it happen to you! Familiarise yourself with some of the common types of scams so that you know what to look out for. When you are desperately looking for a job it is natural to upload your CV to lots of different websites and to apply to opportunities from many different sources. Scammers trawl CV posting sites looking for likely targets be wary of unsolicited emails offering work. If you want to upload a CV online, never include personal information that can be used for identity theft (address, date of birth etc). Consider using a special webmail account just for the CV, so that you will know that any email received at that account is in reply to your online CV. Scammers post advertisements all over the web be especially careful about applying for jobs on websites where information is not vetted (e.g. Gumtree). How can you tell if an opportunity is genuine or not? These tips come from the Spotting scam jobs section of the Careers Service website. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If a company asks you to ring a premium rate number as the only way to apply, be very wary. Be suspicious if directed to different numbers, websites or a different company name than the one in the advert you responded to. This may be done to hide a bad reputation or a scam. Avoid schemes where you make money by signing up new members to sell for you. Make sure you ask questions about the job if you are unsure. Do not be pressurised to sign up to anything you do not fully understand. Do not part with any money unless you understand exactly what you are getting. When you first apply do not provide bank or financial information, passport or similar identification. These might be required later, but only if you get the job. If in doubt: Do not apply for the job Do not agree to sign anything Do not pay for any services on offer Do not return any contact with the organisation Ask the Careers Service for a second opinion If you think you might have been the victim of a scam report it so that the police and/or the Office of Fair Trading can try to prevent it happening to other people. You will also be able to get advice on recovering money you might have lost. See our page on getting advice about scams. How Parents can Help their Kids Find a Good Career
How Parents can Help their Kids Find a Good Career As parents, there are interventions we can engage to support career choice and development among our children. Parents need to realize the influence of their input in career choices among children. As children grow, they will be required to make decisions own their own. Therefore, parents should introduce career advice early enough to their children. A parent should probe his/her children on the type of employment they aspire to pursue and what each job entails. Therefore, as a parent, you should.Listen to your kids and discuss possible options availableevalWhen children talk to us about their career aspiration, we need to look carefully. At the same time, avoid being judgmental lest you discourage the child. Encourage them to come up with possible career options and guide them pursue them. A childâs career decision should be primarily determined by their aspirations rather than a parentâs imagination or desires. However, as children grow, their career goals may change. The change should be accommodated by parents and children guided adequately.Help in career planningIf a child has a glimpse of what they intend to pursue, a parent needs to plan with them on what is required for them. This is necessary for making a positive move towards attaining a career goal. Children should be mandated to make independent decisions. Children must understand advantages and disadvantages of each of the career options available.Encourage them to be outgoing and explore options deeperParent should monitor career aspirations and plans of their children. Are You Ready for a Serious Career Change - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach
Are You Ready for a Serious Career Change It is incredibly common to find yourself in a job that doesnt make you happy. In fact, this is one of the most common reasons that a lot of people have for feeling dissatisfied in their lives. Whether its down to a boss who seems to want to make your life miserable, work that you find utterly unfulfilling, or simply the fact that you find yourself completely bored out of your mind all day long, theres nothing worse than waking up in the morning and dreading the idea of having to go into work. Sadly, for a lot of people, it can often feel like thats the only real option available to them. After all, money makes the world go round and without a job, you could end up in some serious trouble down the line. That being said, just because it can sometimes feel like theres no way to get out of a terrible job and into something better, that doesnt mean that its the case. Making a career change can be incredibly scary and challenging but that doesnt mean that its not worth it. With that in min d, here are some things that you need to do if youre considering a radical career change. Figure out what you want The first thing you have to do when youre deciding to make a change in your career is deciding what it is that you actually want out of a career. This might seem like the simplest thing in the world but the truth is that it can actually be a whole lot more challenging than you might think. After all, people are complicated and what do you want to be? becomes a whole lot more complicated as you get older. After all, its not just a matter of finding a job that makes you happy, though that is an essential part of it. Its also a matter of being sure that you find a job that works within the context of your life and all of the other things that you have going on like friends and family. Figure out what you dont want Of course, its not just a matter of thinking about what you do want, you have to understand what it is that you dont want out of a job as well. If youre unhappy with your current job then its not enough to just decide to move on, you need to take the time to fully come to terms with what it is in your current job thats leaving you unhappy and unfulfilled. Ask yourself, what is it about your job thats making you so unhappy? The truth is that the answer might not be quite as obvious as you first think. There are plenty of surface level aspects of any job that can be incredibly frustrating but if you look deeper, what are you going to find? If you hate your boss then try to take the time to figure out what it is about them that you dislike. Is it their management style? Do they not appreciate your work? Or is it simply that, because theyre your boss, theyre the ones making you do the work that you really hate. Getting to the root of why you dont like your current career path is the only way to be sure you dont make the same mistakes again. Be honest about your circumstances Changing careers can be an amazing thing but its also something of an upheaval, particularly if you have a family to think about. After all, theres a good chance that if you start on a new career path, youre going to have to start from the beginning. Now theres nothing wrong with that, but it is almost certainly going to have an impact on other aspects of your life. In particular, you need to think about your finances. Be honest and ask yourself if starting over is something you can really afford right now. If the answer to that question is no, dont despair. This doesnt mean that youre doomed to stay in the job you hate forever. It just means that you need to think about how youre going to be able to balance the impact of starting over. And if that means that its not something that you can do just yet, at least youll have something you can look to when times get tough. Think about doing some good If theres one thing that ends up making more of us feel frustrated and miserable at work than just about anything else, its the fact that it so often feels like were not doing anything worthwhile with our time. After all, if youre bored at work, its not exactly made better by the fact that youre making your employer rich. Instead, why not look at careers that give you the chance to do some good in the world. Being able to work in a hospital, become an SEN teacher, or work for a non-profit mean that, even when the work gets tough and boring, at least you can be sure that youre doing it for a good reason. Lining the pockets of someone much wealthier than you is hardly going to be the greatest motivator in the world, is it? Be patient The reality if looking for any job is that it can be a slow and difficult process. One of the most discouraging things for a lot of people is the fact that they figure out what they want to do and then they expect to be able to jump into it right away. Thats simply not the case. From extra training to going back into education, there are plenty of stepping stones between where you are and where you want to be. You need to make sure that you dont let that discourage you and that youre as patient as possible through the process of finding your ideal career. Be ready for failure Heres the harsh truth: youre going to fail. In fact, youre going to fail over and over again. Thats just the reality of trying to find any kind of career. Youll apply for jobs that you think youre perfect for and get turned down right away, youll have interviews that never go anywhere, and youll feel like youre just yelling into the wind. The difference between those who get to where they really want to go and everyone else is that they dont give up when they fail. They get back up and try again. The truth is that theres one thing and one thing only that really stands between most people and a career change that would help them find a job they really love: fear. Fear is the thing that holds most of us back from going after what we really want. After all, even if your job makes you miserable, at least its comfortable and familiar. For a lot of people, thats actually preferable to the uncertainty that comes with having to start over and try something new. After all, if you try something new then theres a chance that it wont work out and most people tend to take a better the devil you know kind of approach to a lot of aspects of their lives. However, if you never bother to take any risks in your life then youre never going to make able to get the most out of it that you possibly can. Remember, fortune favours the bold and youre never going to get anywhere sticking your head in the sand.
